John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne, the iconic Prince of Darkness, passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76. Known for his haunting voice, electrifying stage presence, and unparalleled impact on heavy metal, Ozzy leaves behind a legacy that reshaped rock music forever. Born in Aston, Birmingham, England, on December 3, 1948, he rose from a working-class background to become one of the most influential figures in the history of music.

Ozzy first exploded onto the scene in the late 1960s as the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath, a band that many credit with inventing heavy metal. Alongside Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, Ozzy’s eerie vocals on tracks like “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” and “Iron Man” helped define a genre and inspired generations of musicians. His raw voice, combined with Sabbath’s dark, downtuned sound, gave voice to the frustrations of a post-industrial generation and redefined rock forever.

After parting ways with Black Sabbath in 1979, Ozzy embarked on a solo career that would prove equally legendary. With his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne by his side, he launched into the 1980s with the release of Blizzard of Ozz, an album that featured timeless tracks such as “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley.” His solo work, often blending the fantastical with the deeply personal, continued to push boundaries musically and theatrically. Over the decades, he collaborated with guitar virtuosos like Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, and Zakk Wylde, each bringing a new dimension to his evolving sound.

Ozzy’s life was never far from the headlines. His battles with addiction, brushes with the law, and outrageous on-stage antics—including the infamous bat-biting incident—became part of his mythos. Yet behind the chaos was a man of surprising vulnerability, humor, and resilience. His ability to survive what would have destroyed others became a testament to his strength and complexity.

In the early 2000s, Ozzy introduced himself to a new generation through The Osbournes, a pioneering reality television show that brought fans into the daily lives of the eccentric and loving Osbourne family. The show was a cultural phenomenon and helped humanize the larger-than-life rock god, endearing him to millions outside the world of heavy metal.

Ozzy was also the architect of Ozzfest, a touring festival that gave countless metal bands a platform and brought heavy music back to the forefront of live performance culture. He remained a tireless performer even as health issues mounted in his later years, refusing to let age or pain silence the music within him.

His final public appearance came during a farewell concert in Birmingham in June 2025, an emotional full-circle moment that saw Ozzy reunited on stage with Black Sabbath. Weeks later, he was gone—leaving fans and fellow musicians around the world in mourning.

Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Black Sabbath in 2006 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. He is survived by his wife Sharon, children Aimee, Kelly, and Jack, and a global community of fans who will forever echo his name.

He wasn’t just a frontman. He was a movement. A voice for the voiceless. A survivor. A legend. Ozzy is gone, but his shadow will stretch across the music world forever. As he once sang: “I’m going off the rails on a crazy train.” And what a ride it was.
