A Guide to Visiting Lombok Indonesia

I’ve been going to Bali for years, and each time, I find myself captivated by the island’s beauty. However, on my recent journey to Indonesia, I wanted to uncover fresh experiences and learn more about this nation composed of around 18,000 islands. Lombok, just a brief plane ride from Bali, is gaining popularity among travelers seeking a quieter escape from the bustling crowds of Bali.

Spending a few days in Lombok allowed me to explore its highlights, yet it’s clear that one could easily embrace the island lifestyle and extend their stay to a week or even two. There’s so much to discover beyond Bali, and Lombok proves to be a charming destination worth exploring for a more serene and immersive experience.

A Guide to Lombok Indonesia

Upon reaching Lombok, you’ll quickly notice the vast distances between various attractions. The airport is situated in the southern part of the island, close to Bali-inspired establishments like restaurants, cafes, bars, and surf camps. Journeying westward reveals numerous resorts tailored for families, honeymooners, and groups heading to the Gili Islands.

For solo or adventure travelers eager to connect with people, the southern region serves as an excellent base. Here, a few surf camps and health-conscious cafes offer enticing options like smoothie bowls and vegan treats.

If you’re a couple seeking a more resort-style escape, the western part of the island boasts an array of upscale hotels and resorts. During our stay, we found a great deal on Katamaran Resort, a 4-star hotel we discovered online. The west side of Lombok is a must-visit for at least one sunset during your island stay. Overlooking Bali to the west, it provides a stunning backdrop for witnessing the sun setting over the horizon. To explore the coastline, consider renting a Vespa (though exercise caution, as many travel insurances do not cover bike accidents in Indonesia). If you’re heading in this direction, simply enter “Malimbu” into your maps, and you’ll discover this picturesque viewpoint in no time.

Things to Do in Lombok

During our brief stay in Lombok, we concentrated on discovering its beaches, cafes, and viewpoints for breathtaking sunsets. Regrettably, time constraints prevented us from embarking on the island’s epic adventures, leaving us with a longing for a more extended visit. For those fortunate to have more time, here are some standout attractions on the island:

  1. Trek to Tiu Kelep Waterfall: Take a scenic 45-minute hike through the forest to reach the stunning Tiu Kelep Waterfall, offering an epic and refreshing natural spectacle.
  2. Explore Kuta, Lombok: The southern part of Lombok, known as the heart of the island, beckons exploration. Discover delightful eateries, lively bars, and immerse yourself in the laid-back island lifestyle that characterizes Kuta.
  3. Trek Mount Rinjani: For those seeking a thrilling adventure, consider trekking Mount Rinjani. Although the trek spans 2-4 days, the reward is unparalleled panoramic views of Lombok. While time eluded us, it stands out as a must-do for those with a more leisurely schedule.

Our short visit left us yearning for more, emphasizing the island’s diverse offerings. Extending your stay in Lombok allows for a deeper immersion into its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and thrilling adventures that we, unfortunately, missed out on.

Where to Eat & Drink in Lombok

If you’re a food enthusiast, Lombok is a paradise for your taste buds, especially in the southern part of the island. Here, you’ll discover fantastic plant-based restaurants and coffee that rivals, if not surpasses, what you’ll find in Bali. Let’s delve into some noteworthy favorites:

  1. Milk Espresso: For an exceptional coffee experience, head to Milk Espresso. This trendy spot is frequented by digital nomads and coffee enthusiasts alike. The cozy ambiance and stylish table settings make it a perfect place to enjoy a cup of quality coffee.
  2. Kenza Cafe: Indulge in the world of raw vegan cuisine that not only tastes incredible but also looks appealing at Kenza Cafe. What sets this place apart is its commitment to using locally sourced ingredients from the island, providing a fresh and authentic dining experience.
  3. TERRA: Embracing the motto “food that loves you back,” TERRA is an excellent choice for a healthy and hearty boost to your day. The delectable dishes here are so delightful that you might find yourself asking for the recipes. The best part is that everything is incredibly fresh, ensuring a satisfying and nourishing dining experience.

Lombok’s culinary scene offers a blend of flavors that cater to diverse preferences, making it a haven for food lovers. The southern region, in particular, stands out with its array of establishments, each contributing to the island’s reputation as a culinary gem in its own right. Take your time to savor the unique tastes and aromas that Lombok has to offer, and you’ll find yourself falling in love with its gastronomic delights.

Where to stay in Lombok

As previously mentioned, we chose a reasonably priced four-star hotel located on the western side of the island during our stay. Finding excellent last-minute deals online is quite feasible, particularly since Lombok tends to be less crowded than Bali.

In broad terms, the western part of the island, specifically Senggigi, is where you’ll encounter Western-style hotels and a diverse range of luxurious villas. On the other hand, the more relaxed surf camps are situated in Kuta.

A common practice among travelers is to use Lombok as a central base for exploring the Gili Islands, accessible by a short 15-20 minute ferry ride from Lombok. This strategic positioning allows visitors to enjoy the serene atmosphere of Lombok while easily venturing to the picturesque Gili Islands for a day trip or an extended stay. The contrast between the laidback ambiance of Lombok and the vibrant energy of the Gili Islands makes this combination an appealing choice for those seeking diverse experiences within a short travel distance.
