The San Francisco lost 12-6 to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football, falling farther behind the Seattle Seahawks for the NFC West lead. But they lost more than just the game. In the second half, 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to take the field. He had been benched due to the return of Dre Greenlaw, but Greenlaw was injured during the game and San Francisco was without Dee Winters. So, in the spirit of “next man up,” Campbell’s number was called.

But Campbell didn’t take the field. In fact, he didn’t remain on the sideline. Instead, the disgruntled linebacker left the field for the locker room.

And it appears that will be the final time he suits up for the 49ers. On Friday, coach Kyle Shanahan spoke on the situation and the team’s future plans for Campbell.

“We’re working through the semantics of exactly how to deal with it, but you guys heard from me last night, you guys heard from our players, his actions from the game just, it’s not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said.

“So, we’re working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we’ll handle the situation appropriately.” When asked if the team had any contact with Campbell or if he provided any explanation, Shanahan simply said, “No.” Whatever the future holds for Campbell, it looks like it won’t be in San Francisco.
